Observation Narrative
A local, floristically unusual seep. Solidago patula is relatively sparse. This seep contains the only population of Rhynchospora alba at Buffalo Mountain. Substrate is coarser than in most other seeps on the preserve. Most of the surrounding forest vegetation was logged within the past 30 years.
This plot was established to capture the same seep as that sampled by plot BUFF109, which clustered in analysis with calcareous fen/seep communities from Giles and Shenandoah Counties.
Hummocks underlain by shallow, gravelly and rocky, mucky clay; no profile development
Seepage flows contain surficial gravel and cobbles with essentially no soil development
